West Virginia Industrial Asbestos Exposure Sites

West Virginia’s industrial base — anchored by the Kanawha Valley chemical corridor, coal mining, steel manufacturing, and power generation — created sustained occupational asbestos exposure for generations of workers. Asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets, refractory materials, and friction products were standard at virtually every major West Virginia facility through the 1980s.

The Kanawha Valley between Charleston and Nitro is one of the most concentrated petrochemical manufacturing corridors in the United States. Union Carbide, DuPont, Monsanto, FMC, and Bayer all operated major facilities in the valley, using asbestos-containing pipe insulation and refractory materials throughout their plants.
